Dr. Bridges received his B.S. degree from the University of Notre Dame and M.D. from
Louisiana
State
University . He is also the recipient of a Ph.D. in Microbiology from UAB. His internship and residency in Medicine were at the
University of
Texas Medical Branch in
Galveston and he was a Clinical and Research Fellow in the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at UAB. Since completing his fellowship, Dr. Bridges has been a faculty member in the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at UAB, as well as in the Department of Microbiology. His recent appointments at UAB include Professor of Medicine, Professor of Microbiology, Associate Scientist in the Minority Health and
Research
Center , Associate Director of the Arthritis Clinical Intervention Program, and Associate Scientist in the Center for Aging.
Dr. Bridges serves on the Arthritis, Connective Tissue, and Skin Study Section at NIH. He is Chair of the Targeted Research Initiative in Rheumatoid Arthritis for the Arthritis Foundation and also is a member of the American College of Rheumatology Committee on Journal Publications. He has served as an Advisory Editor for Arthritis & Rheumatism. His primary research interests focus on genetic influences associated with susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis and its severity, particularly in African-Americans, and has received extensive NIH funding for these efforts.
